Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a type of weight-loss/bariatric surgery. As the name suggests it can be performed through key-hole method (laparoscopy). In this technique 4 to 5 tiny cuts of half to one cm are made on the abdomen and the entire surgery is performed through that. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy can also be performed in the scar-less manner through a single cut through the belly button. In this procedure, the stomach is divided longitudinally and two-thirds of the stomach is removed. This results into a banana shaped stomach with a capacity of 60 to 100 cc.
Laparoscopic Roux en y gastric bypass surgery was initially started about 45 to 50 years ago where the surgeons discovered that altering the stomach anatomy and re-routing the intestines led to significant weight-loss. It was first discovered by Dr. Mason in the USA. Since then this has been the most consistent weight loss procedure and has stood the test of time. It is also known as the gold-standard bariatric/weight loss procedure. Not only does it lead to significant weight loss, it also has spectacular results in diabetic patients. Obese patients with type 2 diabetes experience significant improvement and achieve much better blood sugar control after a Roux en y gastric bypass. It also leads to significant improvement in other diseases associated with obesity such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, joint pains, PCOD, sleep apnoea etc. It also decreases the risk of heart disease and thrombo-embolism (clotting in leg veins).
However, one must remember that obesity is a chronic progressive disease and as with any weight loss procedure, regular follow up with the bariatric surgeon team is the key to success after a laparoscopic Roux en y gastric bypass.
