Frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) on Gallbladder Surgery, Gall Stone Removal, Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy:

  1. Can gall bladder stones be treated without a surgery?

Even today, the word “surgery” induces fear among patients. This is the most common question that people ask me when they come for a consult for stones in the gall bladder. However, the options for medical treatment of gall stones are limited. At times urso-deoxycholic acid may be tried but the effectivity is questionable. Surgery is the best treatment option for gall bladder stones.

  1. Can just the stones be removed or the entire gall bladder will need to be removed?

Unlike kidney stones, we cannot remove just the stones from the gall bladder. Removal of the entire gall bladder is the standard treatment for gall stone disease all across the world. Once the gall bladder is diseased, it will continue to form more stones.

  1. Are there any side effects if the gall bladder is removed?

First thing that we need to remember is that once you have stones in the gall bladder, it means that the gall bladder is already diseased. More than helping in the digestion process, it will cause problems. Human body adjusts well to removal of the gall bladder. There will be a few dietary restrictions initially, but most people live quite comfortably without a gall bladder. It does not lead to any major side effects in the long term.
