Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker; MS

Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon

The main function of the gall bladder is to store bile that is made in the liver. Once the gall bladder is removed there is a continuous trickling of less concentrated bile into the small intestine.

What to expect after Laparoscopic Gall Bladder removal surgery? (Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy)

This may sometimes have a laxative effect and can also lead to difficulty in digesting fatty foods in the beginning. Although there are no strict dietary guidelines after gall bladder surgery, but following instructions can help:

  1. On the day of surgery, you can have mainly liquids followed by a very light dinner.
  2. For the next 3 to 4 days it is better to have soft and bland diet.
  3. In the next 4 to 6 weeks, it is advisable to avoid very oily, greasy and spicy food. While you can have normal diet with roti and rice, please refrain from very heavy foods like oily gravys, cheesy foods and very spicy recipes. Give the body some time to adjust before you can start having these foods.
  4. It is also advisable to have more fibre in the diet. This will also help in case you develop diarrhoea after gall bladder surgery or laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  5. It may also be advisable to have a multivitamin for the first few weeks as fat-soluble vitamins may not be absorbed adequately in the initial phase.

Rest assured that most of the issues related to surgery may settle down in a few weeks or months after the surgery. If you face any issues in the long term, do contact us at the earliest.
