Hiatus hernia and gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) are common problems. Hiatus hernia is basically a protrusion of abdominal structures other than the food-pipe into the chest cavity through the enlarged hiatal opening in the diaphragm
Lifestyle modification and medical management are the first line of treatment for hiatus hernia. However, in patients with progressive disease not responding to medications and if complications develop then surgery must be considered.
Hiatus hernia surgery (laparoscopic fundoplication) must be considered if:
- Inability to continue medical therapy
- Persistent symptoms despite 12 weeks of medical therapy
- Complications of repeated acid exposure such as- Barrette’s oesophagus and presence of alkaline reflux in the food pipe.
If you have the above factors, then you must consult your hernia surgeon at the earliest and take a decision regarding surgery for hiatus hernia.
